Here are 7 tips on how to wake up early and get that morning work out in Perth done and dusted before excuses arise. This is what works for us.
1. Go to bed early
What time should you go to bed? Work backwards from the time you are going to get up. If you are going to get up at 5.30am, take your 8 hours sleep into consideration so make sure you go to bed by 9.30pm. If you aren’t used to going to bed early, you need to practise! Go to bed 15 minutes earlier every night.
TIP: Don’t drink caffeine or alcohol with dinner as this messes with your sleep cycle, and turn off electronics an hour before bed.
2. Prepare the night before
Get organised so there is no morning rush or excuses!
TIP: Lay out your exercise and work clothes, ipod, magazine, towel, put water bottle in the fridge and prepare your food for the next day.
3. Put your alarm in the next room
Once we’re physically out of bed, it’s not that difficult to get out of bed and go, but hitting the snooze button on the bed side table is way too tempting. Place your mobile phone in your bathroom so you have to get out of bed to turn your alarm off.
TIP: Set 2 alarms! Set a clock radio and mobile phone.
4. Keep your iPod playlist updated
Music is one thing that will get you moving first thing in the morning. Download your favourite songs and change playlists regularly so you aren’t working out to the same songs each time.
TIP: Look on the radio station websites to find what songs are played regularly on the radio.
5. Make it a date
This is a pretty common tip, but you’re less likely to cancel if a friend or personal trainer is waiting for you.
TIP: Find a morning that suits you and your date and put it in your diary. At the end of your workout, remind each other “same day and time next week”! We have some trainers that would love to meet you in the morning for a workout 😉
6. Keep it interesting
Humans are creatures of habit. We tend to do the same thing because it’s easy and what we’re used to. Then we get stuck in a rutt, get bored and stop. Change your workouts every few weeks to keep it fresh and exciting.
TIP: Pick a type of exercise that suits the current season, ie complete a beach/swimming workout in Summer. Look HERE for some FREE workout ideas.
7. Post workout treat
Reward yourself after completing your workout. Whether it’s a quick dip in the ocean, coffee or yummy breaky at your favourite cafe. This can make a big difference to your motivational level when it’s dark outside!
TIP: Choose your treat before you workout so you can look forward to it afterwards 🙂
